You're Not Paranoid (They Are Out To Get You)

You're Not Paranoid
(They Are Out To Get You)
by C.A. Matthews

Some days you think you're going crazy. Then you read your Twitter feed and realize it's not you that's crazy--it's the whole freakin' system that controls our every move that's crazy.

A human rights lawyer, Steven Donziger, represents an indigenous tribe in Ecuador that was poisoned by massive dumping of wastes on their otherwise pristine land by an international oil corporation. This person should be labeled a hero, decorated with ribbons and medals, and should be called a saint on every news show and in every print publication. But no… Donziger's story has been mostly ignored and his reputation smeared in the mainstream media. When he wouldn't give up his computer full of confidential information between his law team and his clients, he was held in criminal contempt of court. But no legitimate court wanted to convict him or try him, so the oil company "bought" itself a judge and hopped up charges in their own kangaroo court just to punish him for being a good guy. And get this--the US  government is perfectly okay with an oil company calling the shots!

If that ain't crazy! The hero in his own words:

“Chevron caused a mass industrial poisoning in the Amazon that crushed the lives of Indigenous peoples. Six courts and 28 appellate judges found the company guilty. Fight on.” —Steven Donziger

Conviction of Steven Donziger, said one critic, “perfectly encapsulates how corporate power has twisted the U.S. justice system to protect corporate interests and punish their enemies.” Julia Conley, Six Month Sentence for Lawyer Who Took on Chevron

This past week, another court in the UK held a hearing to expedite a journalist to the US for simply reporting the truth to the world.

Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges says of Julian Assange:

Assange’s “crime” is that he exposed the more than 15,000 unreported deaths of Iraqi civilians. He exposed the torture and abuse of some 800 men and boys, aged between 14 and 89, at Guantánamo. He exposed that Hillary Clinton in 2009 ordered US diplomats to spy on U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and other U.N. representatives from China, France, Russia, and the UK, spying that included obtaining DNA, iris scans, fingerprints, and personal passwords, part of the long pattern of illegal surveillance that included the eavesdropping on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in the weeks before the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. He exposed that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and the CIA orchestrated the June 2009 military coup in Honduras that overthrew the democratically-elected president Manuel Zelaya, replacing it with a murderous and corrupt military regime. He exposed that George W. Bush, Barack Obama and General David Petraeus prosecuted a war in Iraq that under post-Nuremberg laws is defined as a criminal war of aggression, a war crime, which authorized hundreds of targeted assassinations, including those of US citizens in Yemen. He exposed that the United States secretly launched missile, bomb, and drone attacks on Yemen, killing scores of civilians. He exposed that Goldman Sachs paid Hillary Clinton $657,000 to give talks, a sum so large it can only be considered a bribe, and that she privately assured corporate leaders she would do their bidding while promising the public financial regulation and reform. He exposed the internal campaign to discredit and destroy British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn by members of his own party. He exposed how the hacking tools used by the CIA and the National Security Agency permits the wholesale government surveillance of our televisions, computers, smartphones and anti-virus software, allowing the government to record and store our conversations, images and private text messages, even from encrypted apps.

He exposed the truth. He exposed it over and over and over until there was no question of the endemic illegality, corruption and mendacity that defines the global ruling elite. And for these truths alone he is guilty.

Chris Hedges, The Most Important Battle For Press Freedom In Our Time

So, Julian Assange, an Australian publisher who exposes corruption and murder millions of times over will be extradited from the UK to the US so the US can lock him in solitary confinement and push him even further over the edge mentally and emotionally just because he embarrassed the sadistic military-industrial complex and corrupt politicians by showing the world what's really happening.

And that's not crazy?

I'll tell you what it is--it's downright immoral, is what it is. The Assanges and Donzigers of the world are a rare breed of human being brave enough to take on the sick and twisted system, knowing they could be severely penalized for simply doing their jobs. They face their tormentors and suffer unjust punishments for the good of humanity. They are rewarded by silence or outright lies streaming from the lips of mass media "darlings" willing to do the dirty work of covering for the depravity of those in power.

We're not crazy--we're not paranoid. The system is out to get us, subdue us, and bend our will to theirs. We can't let them do this. We need to act like Julian Assange and publish the truth come what may anyway. We need to act like Steven Donziger and stand up for the marginalized and defenseless peoples of the Earth.

If we don't… We will become the very sickness they lost their freedom to fight. We will become truly crazy. And the evil status quo wins.

From Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund:

The age of trickle-down tax-cut economics is coming to an end!

President Biden and Congressional leaders have just released the Build Back Better legislation that we have been working on for months. It’s historic legislation that will recover the revenue lost in the tax handouts given to the rich and corporations by the Trump-GOP tax scam in 2017―and make bold investments in working families and the environment.

Right now, members of the House are under pressure to vote for the bipartisan infrastructure bill (it’s already passed the Senate) before all 50 Democratic votes in the Senate are even secured for the Build Back Better legislation. In order to guarantee passage of this historic agenda, we’re demanding the House hold the line: No vote on infrastructure without assurance that Build Back Better will pass the Senate!

Click here to write a letter to your members of Congress urging them to hold strong on Build Back Better. The bills must be passed together to ensure the bill remains as robust as possible.

Here’s what the Build Back Better bill will do:

It will invest in universal preschool for all 3- and 4-year olds, make high quality childcare more affordable, expand Medicaid home care to keep older Americans and people with disabilities in their homes while paying care workers a fair wage, expand Medicare to cover hearing, extend the Child Tax Credit that is providing monthly cash payments to 35 million families, invest in clean energy and combat the climate crisis.

This bill is 100% paid for by closing tax loopholes used by the rich and corporations, requiring a 15% minimum tax to stop wealthy corporations from dodging their fair share of taxes, taxing firms that enrich shareholders rather than invest in workers, catching rich tax cheats that are evading $160 billion in taxes every year, creating a special higher tax rate for the ultra-wealthy, and more.

Small businesses and people making under $400,000 a year won’t pay any more in taxes.

Click here to write to your U.S. representative and senators and urge them to hold the line: No vote on infrastructure without Build Back Better. Tell them it’s time to invest in working families―completely paid for by making the rich and corporations pay their fair share.

This is the most important shift in our country’s priorities in a generation―ending trickle-down tax-cut economics for the rich and finally investing in our families and communities. Let’s get this across the finish line!

Families Belong Together (Logo)

In less than a week, the Biden administration plans to restart the horrible, Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy in border cities that the Biden administration advises all U.S. citizens to avoid going there because they are so potentially dangerous.

This policy illegally denies safety to families in the U.S. and sends them back to danger -- where the State Department recommends U.S. citizens avoid due to crime and kidnapping. Families are then forced to wait for months on end, with little to no resources, in makeshift tent homes, sometimes with children with disabilities like cerebral palsy or epilepsy.

The consequences have been devastating: over 7,000 people have been kidnapped or victims of violent attacks after being turned back from seeking safety in the U.S.

Restarting this racist policy is immoral and inhumane. President Biden promised to restore an immigration system that welcomes people with dignity, but he is doing the opposite:

Demand that the Biden administration stop forcing families back into danger.

Tell biden: stop Remain In Mexico

If Remain in Mexico restarts in November, families who have trekked to our front door seeking safety may be forced to make an impossible decision: separate from your children for the chance they will be free from danger, or await your asylum trial together in a city where migrants are highly susceptible to being kidnapped, extorted, or killed.

So far, over 70,000 migrants seeking safety have been sent back to these border cities, including at least 16,000 babies, children, and teenagers.

People deserve access to basic human needs and to claim asylum in the U.S. We need to do everything possible to stop Remain in Mexico from returning. Join me today and take action for babies, children, pregnant people, and families who want a future free from violence and tragedy in the U.S.

Tell biden: stop Remain in Mexico

We can’t let Remain in Mexico jeopardize the lives of children and families looking for a safer tomorrow. President Biden must live up to his promise to restore asylum.

Thanks for all you do,

"Kind Imperialism"

"Kind Imperialism"

by C.A. Matthews

After a half year of studying US immigration law and policy, you'd think I'd be over it by now. But I'm not. I feel like ripping my hair out by the roots some days because our government refuses to follow its own laws and the protocols it has signed with the United Nations but somehow expects everyone else on the planet to do so. Perfectly, no less!

Hypocritical isn't it?

What triggered my hair pulling this week was news of how the Biden administration is expediting removals at the border. Our government is so hyped up to send people packing as fast as possible who step over the invisible boundary line that it's actually deporting US citizens. Yeah, no kidding! ICE has arrested 674, detained 121, and deported at least 70 US citizens in the past five years.

What makes this horror even more horrific is that non-citizens aren't guaranteed legal representation, and we've adopted a "guilty until proven innocent" attitude toward these poor souls. So, these unfortunates soon find themselves locked up in "detention facilities" (a nice name for a private-run, for-profit prison) until someone can find out what the hell happened to them and spring them.

Our Border Patrol and ICE won't believe you when you simply state that you're a US citizen or even bother to look up your contacts to testify to the fact apparently. They just enjoy locking people up during a pandemic who don't fit their idea of what a "citizen" is supposed to look like.

How many white people do you think ICE "accidentally" locked up in their detention centers? How many with Hispanic surnames or dark skin? Uh-huh.

But the worst injustice happens to asylum seekers who are coming to our country looking for refuge from well-founded fears of gang violence, domestic violence, and war. The US signed the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees stating that we agree with the UN's definition of a refugee. It says:

A refugee is any person who is outside their country of nationality and is unwilling or unable to return because of fear of persecution because of that person's race, nationality, religion, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion and the government is unable or unwilling to provide protection.

We've agreed to protect refugees, officially labeled by the UN or self-labeled (asylum seekers). And yet we won't let these asylum seekers stay in the US as we process their claim to asylum as we agreed to when we signed the 1967 Protocol. No, we're kicking them out at our border crossings without due process, without an actual hearing with a trained asylum officer who is capable of accepting their plea for asylum.

We let ICE officers act like Nazi Brown Shirts and deny asylum seekers justice. We are breaking our own laws and breaking our covenant with the United Nations in regards to refugees. We are the lawbreakers--not those fleeing for their lives.

They are simply trying to find a safe haven. They are searching for a peaceful land to live in and raise their families. Many have escaped hell, and yet we greet them at our borders with more of the same. In desperation, many have sent their children on ahead of them to the US in hopes of keeping their kids safe from the violence they are fleeing.

We really should be ashamed of ourselves. For some reason, we are not.

Yes, the "kids are cages" exist to this very day. Children fleeing for their lives because they are orphaned, abused, or were told by their parents or guardians that it was safer for them in the US than to remain in their homeland. This surge in unaccompanied children began during the Obama administration and has continued on under his former vice president.

You can change the figurehead in Washington DC, but you can't change our egregious immigration policies, or so it seems. Our immigration policing agencies (birthed a mere 20 years ago with the creation of the Department of Homeland Security) continue to reinforce the same racist, capitalistic, slave-laborer-loving quotas that the oligarchs have desired since the founding of our country.

"Kind Imperialism" is one way of putting it. The US has conquered/is conquering/is attempting to conquer the rest of the world, and yet we try to keep a kind face on our imperialistic, colonizing ways. Face it--we're not the friendly "melting pot" of cultures we were taught in fifth grade social studies. I haven't believed that lie for many years now.

Have you?

It doesn't take a certificate in immigration advocacy to understand prejudice and inhumanity after observing our government's actions toward immigrants. It's time for Americans to confess their personal indifference and call out the travesty of justice inflicted upon our neighbors by the agents of the DHS.

It's time to act kindly toward our neighbors.

Pololū Valley is a sacred place in Hawaii. It’s not only known for its beauty and lush wildlife, but it’s also land that embodies the history of Hawaiian people. But it now faces a severe threat: developers who could turn it into a parking lot. Hundreds of thousands are outraged, and are demanding immediate action to save this sacred land. The group Protect Pololū Valley started this petition and need your support to protect Pololū Valley.

Protect Pololū Valley

698,888 have signed Protect Pololu Valley’s petition. Let’s get to 1,000,000!

Pololū is a sacred place. A pu’uhōnua (a place of refuge, peace and safety). Kohala is the birthplace of an infant who sought refuge in Pololū Valley and grew up to become the King of Hawaii and unify the lands. Original place names of this region tell the mo’olelo (story) of how the people of this place protected this infant on his journey to Pololū Valley. "A‘ohe u‘i hele wale o Kohala" (No youth of Kohala goes empty-handed) speaks to the generosity of the Kohala people. Pololū Valley is more than a place of "cultural signficance". It is the history of the Hawaiian people. It is a place of refuge that we must protect for our future generations.

On December 11, 2020 at the Board of Land and Natural Resources meeting the Division of Forestry and Wildlife submitted a request for approval to apply as a co-applicant to the County of Hawaii Planning Department together with Surety Kohala Corporation and KP Holdings LLC to submit a PCRS application for a 13-lot subdivision along the ridge at Pololū Valley. A request for approval to enter into a Letter of Intent with Surety Kohala Corporation and KP Holdings LLC was also submitted to donate land to the State of Hawaii.

At this meeting representatives from these organizations spoke as if the community was in agreement with their submittals. No one from the community attended the meeting or was notified about it. Prior discussions with the community were about the donation of lands to the State which include 5 acres to build a "comfort station" and parking lot for visitors and acreage on the valley floor for conservation. There was NO discussion about the proposed subdivison along the ridge. Surety Kohala Corporation and KP Holdings LLC will only donate land to the State AFTER the County approves the application for the subdivision. This is not a donation. It’s a payout.

This is a process of greed. It doesn’t consider the wisdom of our kūpuna (elders) and the future of our keiki (children). It doesn’t acknowledge Pololū Valley as a wahi pāna (a sacred place). Instead, the land is sold, as "the best view" to the highest bidder, during a pandemic and a climate crisis. The State of Hawaii has mismanaged conservation lands of our sacred mountain Mauna Kea, just as these organizations continue to mismanage the generosity of the people.

SIGN THIS PETITION TO PROTECT POLOLŪ VALLEY AND TELL SURETY KOHALA CORPORATION AND KP HOLDINGS LLC, BOARD OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES, DIVISION OF FORESTRY AND WILDLIFE, COUNTY OF HAWAII AND THE COUNTY OF HAWAII PLANNING DEPARTMENT THAT OUR VOICES WILL BE HEARD AND THAT WE DO NOT WANT MORE DESECRATION AT THIS SACRED PLACE OF REFUGE.

From Public Citizen:

No matter how much we all wish it were so, the coronavirus pandemic is NOT over:

  • The much more contagious Delta variant is now the dominant strain of COVID-19 in the U.S.
  • Cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are spiking in many parts of the country.
  • Far too many people have refused to get vaccinated (in large part because of irresponsible and unconscionable propaganda being spread by countless Republican politicians and right-wing media degenerates like Fox News’ sadistic Tucker Carlson — who are sacrificing their own followers to advance a Trumpist, neo-fascist agenda).
  • Yet state and local officials all across America are lifting commonsense restrictions and ending relief efforts as if the pandemic is all but over, despite the plain evidence staring us right in our faces.
  • And it’s all even worse throughout much of the world.
There is, to state the obvious, A LOT of work still to do.

One thing we need to do — and fast — is put pressure on Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson to share their vaccine technology with the world. This will help save millions of lives around the globe and minimize the risk of even worse variants making their way to America.

Tell the CEOs of Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson:

Share your vaccine recipes and know-how with the world — to save millions of lives around the globe and to reduce the risk of even worse variants making their way to America.

Add your name.

Thanks for taking action.

#AbolishThePolice/DemonetizeTheChildren

#AbolishThePolice/

DemonetizeTheChildren

How many Humvees and Tasers does an average police department need? How much pepper spray and teargas? If you have a reputation for killing persons of color, it seems you can never have too many army cast-offs or spend too much of your city's budget on obtaining weapons of war to use against your civilian population, in groups or individually.

How much is a child's life worth? If you're twelve-year-old Tamir Rice or thirteen-year-old Adam Toledo, not much. It's not even worth very much if you're sixteen or seventeen or twenty, especially if there's some money to be made in it for private prisons or immigrant detention centers.

Let's not deny the facts any longer. In a capitalist society neither children nor adults of color nor the poor and homeless of any color or gender identity are seen as having much worth in the eyes of those in power. Those of lesser worth  are seen as disposable commodities to the wealthy elites, things to be used and abused and then thrown in a landfill (grave) or cage (prison) at will.

Since testimony began in the Derek Chauvin trial on March 29, at least 64 people have died at the hands of police nationwide. Black and Brown people represent more than half of those killed. With the re-opening of  public spaces as the world is declared "post-Covid," we should only expect more deaths by cops.

According to Marjorie Cohn:

On April 27, the International Commission of Inquiry on Systemic Racist Police Violence Against People of African Descent in the United States, for which I am serving as a rapporteur, will release its report with findings of fact and recommendations addressed to national and international policy makers. The commission is examining whether police violence against Black people in the U.S. constitutes a gross violation of international human rights and fundamental freedoms. Testimony was presented to the commission by family members and attorneys about police killings of 43 Black people and the paralyzing of another, all of whom were unarmed or were not threatening the officers or others. --The Supreme Court Is Also To Blame For Daunte Wright's Death

So, it's not just Chauvin and his ilk who are at fault. We can't just lay the blame on "a couple of bad apples." Our human rights are being deliberately abridged. The corrupt system that runs our country is to blame for perpetuating this overtly military-style response against its own people.

You aren't seeing things. US policing budgets in total are greater than budgets for the Indian and Russian Armies. Take that Russiagaters! Why should anyone obsess over one poor country like Russia so much  when it can't even afford to spend for its actual army as much as we do on just our police?

Could conspiracies like Russiagate be just another way to deflect attention away from things that really matter? A method of keeping the public from dwelling on the number of deaths caused by the police and the fact that kids are still being held in cages along our border with Mexico?

So, why is the US police force the third wealthiest "army" on the entire planet? (We already have the world's largest conventional army by far.) The answer is clear: we're at war with our own citizens. People of color are being used for target practice, and all citizens are being forced to pay ever more taxes to cover up police malpractice, that is, police brutality.

When we say "demilitarize the police" it means it's time to take away their military-grade weaponry that is being used against civilians who are exercising their freedom of speech and right to assemble. When we say "defund the police" it's backed up by the above memes which demonstrate just how much money our government pumps into what is  one of the best customers of
the Military-Industrial Complex, your local police department.

"Demonetize the children" should be self-explanatory. Any cop killing anyone's child--including an adult child--should be charged with murder. Private prisons and detention centers should be closed because no one should be making billions of dollars off the suffering of others, particularly struggling drug addicts and refugees fleeing violence.  Compassion not cages should always be our goal.

Until we see money taken away from police departments, away from the Military-Industrial Complex, and away from the pockets of the for-profit prison/detention center industry, we will only see more innocents shot by the police, more protests, and more arrests to fill the prisons.

There's really only one answer to this genocidal mess. Replace cops with social workers to answer calls dealing with people in mental/emotional crises. Take the guns off those who walk a beat much like the British bobbies who don't carry weapons. More empathy, more training, more psychological testing of police recruits. Zero hiring of white supremacists, zero military equipment, zero lethal force allowed.

Abolish the police and replace them with what we need, not what the gun manufacturers want.  And stop putting a price tag on human life.

Common Defense

My name is Kyle Bibby and I served in the Marine Corps as an Infantry Officer for over six years. As a Black man who earned the uniform and served this country, I, along with many other Black veterans, am growing concerned with the military equipment being utilized by police departments across the country.

Increasingly, the training, equipment, and ultimately philosophy of policing in the United States are being modeled to approach American civilians as threats. Police departments receive militarized vests, armored vehicles, weaponry, and training that they end up deploying against civilians in the streets — especially Black and brown civilians.

Over the past year, we’ve witnessed a consistent and utterly unacceptable deployment of force by uniformed police, and a culture of violence that seeks to dominate communities rather than serve and heal them. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we can’t continue this war in our streets.

Yet, the trend of the military giving police combat gear is getting worse, not better — the police are on track to get more military hardware in 2021 than they did in 2020. Congress needs to act.

We must all come together as veterans and civilian supporters to condemn the use of war force in our streets. Sign this petition today to DEMAND that Congress pressure the Biden Administration and the Department of Defense to stop giving police combat gear.

Add your name »

I became a Marine in 2007, but I'll be Black my entire life, treated differently in and out of my uniform.

I know that any interaction with police could all too easily lead to detention, injury, or death. The police don’t care that I’ve gone to war to protect this country — I could be the next George Floyd, or Daunte Wright, solely due to the color of my skin.

While many are saying that our system is broken, I have to disagree. Our system is working the way it was designed — to oppress and disenfranchise the Black community while disguising it as “law and order”. The rot is to the core and to the roots.

Simple reform isn’t enough: We must dismantle the system brick by brick and push for transformative change together by standing strong and not allowing our justice system to stay the same any longer.

Unleashing the military on the people is not the solution and will not stop protests, it will only create more pain and death in our streets. Join us today by signing this petition to DEMAND that Congress and the Biden Administration end the flow of military weapons and training to our police.

JUSTICE FOR DAUNTE WRIGHT MEANS DEFUNDING AND ABOLISHING THE POLICE

The Movement for Black Lives and our supporters support the family and community of Daunte Wright who had his life ripped from him by former police officer Kim Potter. Daunte was a beloved son, brother and father to a two-year-old. We’re grieving alongside his family and community, and will continue fighting to defund the police in the pursuit of justice and Black liberation.

A police officer murdered Daunte just miles from where another officer murdered George Floyd last year. As Black people in Minnesota and across the country have been forced to relive George Floyd’s murder during the ongoing trial of his murderer, Derek Chauvin, the murder of Daunte Wright is a harsh reminder of the daily threat the police pose to Black lives, while police departments continue to be rewarded with outsized budgets and impunity.

Police killed 121 people in traffic stops in 2020, and Black people are pulled over at disproportionate rates with deadly consequences — Sandra Bland, Philando Castile and now Daunte Wright. A traffic stop should never be a death sentence. There is no excuse for the continued murders and terror inflicted by police.

As the Brooklyn Center, Minneapolis, and broader Minnesota communities grieve, a militarized police force continues to perpetrate tremendous harm on a community in mourning, with police officers recklessly shooting tear gas at protestors and arresting and jailing people at protests for extended periods of time in an intentional effort to further terrorize and silence our communities.

Charging Kim Potter is not enough to create real accountability for police or real safety for these communities. Ultimately only defunding and abolishing the police will stop this terror and bring about real safety. There is no ‘reforming’ this system—the time is now to divest from deadly policing and invest in a vision of public safety that protects us all.

We’re calling for all those who stand in defense of Black lives to support Black-led organizations in Minneapolis and across Minnesota as they continue to support and mobilize their communities in this moment. If you’re able, send donations to:

The Movement for Black Lives will continue to carry Daunte with us as we fight for the justice that Black people and communities deserve.

In Power,

The Movement for Black Lives
