AT&T Hates Our Cat

AT&T Hates Our Cat

by C.A. Matthews

We returned home from the cat shelter around 1 PM with our new foster cat Elsie, a twelve-year-old tabby with a sweet disposition who we hoped would be a friend to our four-year-old cat, Bowtie. Since Bowtie had been cooped up for a while, and it is his normal schedule to take a romp in our garden in the afternoon, we let him out so we could concentrate on settling Elsie into her new home. We have a long lot with trees and many raspberry bushes on a slight incline away from our house, so we were unaware that anything was amiss with our back fence line when we let him out.

Little did we know that while we were out picking up Elsie contract workers for AT&T had bent over our wire fence, dug a deep trench, cut away limbs from the trees behind us, and opened an exit for a curious and frightened cat to dart through when he heard the loud noises of their equipment shoving fiber optic cable underground. We had received no warning from AT&T that they would be doing such work in our area. Nothing—no paper hanger on the door, no post card in the mail, no phone call. We had no idea that their workers could casually knock over our fence and leave it that way, causing our beloved pet to escape...

...I believe this incident sends a message: Those of us who live in normal, working class neighborhoods have zero rights compared to huge corporations. Our local officials can’t be bothered to stand up for us if our property is damaged and our pets or family members become lost or hurt, either...

Exposing The Lie

Exposing The Lie

by C.A. Matthews

I never quite fell for the lie.  And, perhaps, that's been a saving grace.

I never quite believed what my ninth grade Civics teacher told us one day in class. Our economy was supposed to go on and on and grow and grow, forever and forever. Literally. When I dare questioned, "Why?" I was told, "Because it has to."

"But what if everyone already has two cars, a home, and all the stuff a family could possibly ever want or need in it?" I wondered aloud.

I got strange looks from my classmates upon that utterance. No worries, I was used to it even back then. I figured I wasn't supposed to think outside the box and expose the lie. I was supposed to just keep quiet and accept it. I pretended I did to get through the rest of the unit and receive a decent grade on the test, but I never really believed what I read in our textbook or wrote on those tests.

Flash forward to middle age and then some: Now more than ever, I don't believe anything anyone with any so-called "expert qualifications" tells me about the lie. I go along with billions of others worldwide who believe just the opposite. Economies aren't supposed to expand exponentially forever at the expense of the planet's and the people's health and well-being.

Those of us in the know realize what we have in the US is a fiat currency. Simply put, we'll always have more than enough money for endless wars and weapons spending and tax cuts and bailouts for the rich, but we'll never have enough to cover health care costs for our people or education costs from pre-K through college for everyone or guaranteed housing for all. Nope, we no can do under the lie that the powers-that-be operate under and force us to follow. We're told that We the Little People will have to manage without, or spend out all the "ones-and-zeroes" in our bank accounts just to provide the bare necessities of food and shelter and health care for our loved ones.

"That's the way of the world," we're told by our so-called elected officials as they vote themselves a pay raise, give more "free money" to banks and corporations who mismanaged their ones-and-zeroes in their ledger sheets, and ignore our increasingly worsening plight.

But it doesn't have to be that way. How do I know? Remember, I don't believe in the lie and once one's eyes are opened (or re-opened) one can't see things the way the liars would like us to see them. I don't see how it can be considered "fair" or "legal" to allow people to die because they can't afford an operation or medicines to keep them healthy and alive. I don't accept the lie simply because those with more ones-and-zeroes on their bank statements tell us to. I don't see these persons as my superiors to be obeyed like a mindless slave. I resist and I speak up.

Even worse, I encourage others to resist the lie and speak out against it too.

Are you in the know? How do you know if you are? How do you know you've not fallen hopelessly into the pit of liars?

If you've noticed the increasing number of  COVID-19 deaths in the US, heard on a podcast or via the grapevine how many workers worldwide are currently on strike or are voting to organize and/or strike or are simply walking off their jobs because they've had enough of the liars' manipulations and ill-treatment of workers, then you're part of the billions like me. We don't believe in the lie called capitalism. We don't see it as a fair and equitable way to distribute resources to all human beings because simply there's no proof that it actually works for the majority of us.

Sure, there are thousands and thousands of private non-profits and "charity organizations" worldwide that fill in the gaps, but why are there "gaps" in the first place? Could it be because our so-called "democratically elected governments" don't want to fill in the gaps because they don't give a sh*t about hungry and homeless people and wish they'd just fade away? Just look at how the US government puts all the onus of picking up the slack of not taking care of all its people onto the backs of those most easily guilted into doing so. And these charity groups do it because they've come to believe the lie all along that it is their job to do so.

What if we told them that it shouldn't be left in the hands of private charitable agencies to take care of the public's needs? What if we opened their eyes as well to the lie and how their good natures have been taken advantage of for centuries by evil and selfish men who want to keep the majority of resources to themselves? What would happen? Would these charitable persons demand an end to the lie of capitalism and expose its ugliness to the world?

We'll have to see. Some folks are really into being bigwigs in the non-profit realm and see themselves as successful capitalists, too. They've joined the "Liars Club" and profit immensely from the status quo. They might not want to give up giving out  old clothing to poor homeless vets and the occasional free meal or donating canned goods that were given away as a favor to clear the shelves for new products to be stocked at well-to-do grocery stores. But maybe, just maybe, once the charitable bigwigs become a part of the working class living from paycheck to paycheck, hand out to hand out, they'll start to see the bigger picture, too.

Until then, don't close your eyes and forget how you see the lie at work in the world. Help others to see it and denounce it. And don't cross the picket lines.

 Stand.earth

Climate chaos or a clean energy future – that’s the choice before world leaders at COP26. Demand that they move to keep fossil fuels in the ground and pass a Fossil Fuel Treaty.

In less than two weeks, I’ll be with leaders from around the world in Glasgow, Scotland for COP26 to discuss how the world will combat climate change.

I firmly believe that if we’re to stave off the worst of the climate crisis, a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty based on the principles of no new exploration, a managed wind down of existing production, and a just transition must be a major topic of conversation.

However, we’ve learned from past COPs that without significant amounts of public pressure, world leaders can avoid hard questions and decisions. We can’t let that happen.

World leaders need to not just understand what’s at stake, but that they’ll be held accountable if they don’t do what’s necessary in the fight to maintain a habitable climate.

Will you sign the petition demanding world leaders start working on a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty at COP26?

PASS A FOSSIL FUEL TREATY

The record breaking heat waves, extreme weather events, and catastrophic wildfires we’ve seen over the past few years are nothing compared to what’s coming if the global community doesn’t come together to keep fossil fuels in the ground and initiate a just transition to clean energy.

It’s incredible that this hasn’t happened sooner. As historic as the Paris Climate Accords were, there was no mention of coal, oil, or gas – the fossil fuels responsible for 86% of global emissions [1] – in the entire document. Not once! You can’t solve a problem if you won’t even recognize it.

And let’s be clear – we have plenty of solutions and a clear path forward to transition from fossil fuels to clean energy while keeping workers employed and economies strong.

We know that we have more than enough renewable energy potential to replace fossil fuels without needing any new production. [2] We know that renewable energy is cheaper than fossil fuels, and the disparity keeps growing. [3] We know that, at least in the United States, there are three times more clean energy jobs than fossil fuels jobs. [4]

Join me in calling on world leaders to choose a clean energy future over climate chaos by negotiating a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Climate change is a global problem and it’s time that the world started acting accordingly.

As a member of the Stand.earth community, you know that we can do anything we put our minds to.

We’ve gone up against multinational oil, gas, and coal companies worth billions of dollars and come out victorious, blocking dozens of their projects that would have poisoned local communities and accelerated the climate crisis. We’ve protected millions of acres of forests that people thought couldn’t be saved. We’ve shifted billions of dollars of purchasing from corporate powerhouses like Starbucks, Staples, and Levi’s onto sustainable pathways.

Because of people like you, we're achieving victories that others thought were impossible. This community is more than half a million people strong (and growing!). Together, we're using our collective power to fight climate change, protect wild spaces, stand with impacted communities, and say no to new fossil fuels.

Now, let’s make the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty a priority at COP26.

With hope and determination,

From Hip Hop Caucus:

We need to kill the oil industry before the oil industry kills us.

What we definitely do not need to be doing is approving the hundreds of petrochemical plants Biden is set to approve. Creating oil and plastics is bad for our water supply. It’s bad for our air supply. It’s bad for our very survival. And if Joe Biden is as serious as he claims to be about protecting our future, he’ll stop this madness before it goes even further.

TELL JOE BIDEN: Stop pouring fuel on the raging fire of the Climate Crisis. Stop Approving Petrochemical plants.

Big oil makes money for big oil. In the process, these are the companies which dodge their taxes, poison every community they enter, give us cancer, and burn the very planet we rely upon for life. It’s disgusting enough we have to fight the fatal impacts of the petrochemical plants which already exist.

The very least we can do is not create any more.

The People United

Next week, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments about Texas’s extreme anti-abortion law. But the mere fact that they refused to overrule it on sight two months ago has sent other states scurrying to craft knock-off legislation.

We need to send a loud, clear message: Abortion is a right, and we’re not going to allow it to be taken away by a rigged Supreme Court or a gerrymandered state legislature.

Sign the petition: Stop six-week abortion bans! Protect our reproductive freedoms!

SIGN NOW

The People United fights for politicians who will work to unrig the courts and codify the right to an abortion in law, by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act and repealing the Hyde Amendment.

Together, we will win.

In solidarity,

The People United

The People United is new, but our fight is as old as democracy itself. Corporate interests use big money to make politicians betray the People. But there are more of us―and together, we can push things forward.

We're fighting to elect candidates who don’t take power for granted, and are willing to use it to fight for the People as hard as Mitch McConnell fights for corporations.

We won’t have deep-pocketed corporate donors. This is only going to work if The People are United.

"Kind Imperialism"

"Kind Imperialism"

by C.A. Matthews

After a half year of studying US immigration law and policy, you'd think I'd be over it by now. But I'm not. I feel like ripping my hair out by the roots some days because our government refuses to follow its own laws and the protocols it has signed with the United Nations but somehow expects everyone else on the planet to do so. Perfectly, no less!

Hypocritical isn't it?

What triggered my hair pulling this week was news of how the Biden administration is expediting removals at the border. Our government is so hyped up to send people packing as fast as possible who step over the invisible boundary line that it's actually deporting US citizens. Yeah, no kidding! ICE has arrested 674, detained 121, and deported at least 70 US citizens in the past five years.

What makes this horror even more horrific is that non-citizens aren't guaranteed legal representation, and we've adopted a "guilty until proven innocent" attitude toward these poor souls. So, these unfortunates soon find themselves locked up in "detention facilities" (a nice name for a private-run, for-profit prison) until someone can find out what the hell happened to them and spring them.

Our Border Patrol and ICE won't believe you when you simply state that you're a US citizen or even bother to look up your contacts to testify to the fact apparently. They just enjoy locking people up during a pandemic who don't fit their idea of what a "citizen" is supposed to look like.

How many white people do you think ICE "accidentally" locked up in their detention centers? How many with Hispanic surnames or dark skin? Uh-huh.

But the worst injustice happens to asylum seekers who are coming to our country looking for refuge from well-founded fears of gang violence, domestic violence, and war. The US signed the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees stating that we agree with the UN's definition of a refugee. It says:

A refugee is any person who is outside their country of nationality and is unwilling or unable to return because of fear of persecution because of that person's race, nationality, religion, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion and the government is unable or unwilling to provide protection.

We've agreed to protect refugees, officially labeled by the UN or self-labeled (asylum seekers). And yet we won't let these asylum seekers stay in the US as we process their claim to asylum as we agreed to when we signed the 1967 Protocol. No, we're kicking them out at our border crossings without due process, without an actual hearing with a trained asylum officer who is capable of accepting their plea for asylum.

We let ICE officers act like Nazi Brown Shirts and deny asylum seekers justice. We are breaking our own laws and breaking our covenant with the United Nations in regards to refugees. We are the lawbreakers--not those fleeing for their lives.

They are simply trying to find a safe haven. They are searching for a peaceful land to live in and raise their families. Many have escaped hell, and yet we greet them at our borders with more of the same. In desperation, many have sent their children on ahead of them to the US in hopes of keeping their kids safe from the violence they are fleeing.

We really should be ashamed of ourselves. For some reason, we are not.

Yes, the "kids are cages" exist to this very day. Children fleeing for their lives because they are orphaned, abused, or were told by their parents or guardians that it was safer for them in the US than to remain in their homeland. This surge in unaccompanied children began during the Obama administration and has continued on under his former vice president.

You can change the figurehead in Washington DC, but you can't change our egregious immigration policies, or so it seems. Our immigration policing agencies (birthed a mere 20 years ago with the creation of the Department of Homeland Security) continue to reinforce the same racist, capitalistic, slave-laborer-loving quotas that the oligarchs have desired since the founding of our country.

"Kind Imperialism" is one way of putting it. The US has conquered/is conquering/is attempting to conquer the rest of the world, and yet we try to keep a kind face on our imperialistic, colonizing ways. Face it--we're not the friendly "melting pot" of cultures we were taught in fifth grade social studies. I haven't believed that lie for many years now.

Have you?

It doesn't take a certificate in immigration advocacy to understand prejudice and inhumanity after observing our government's actions toward immigrants. It's time for Americans to confess their personal indifference and call out the travesty of justice inflicted upon our neighbors by the agents of the DHS.

It's time to act kindly toward our neighbors.

Pololū Valley is a sacred place in Hawaii. It’s not only known for its beauty and lush wildlife, but it’s also land that embodies the history of Hawaiian people. But it now faces a severe threat: developers who could turn it into a parking lot. Hundreds of thousands are outraged, and are demanding immediate action to save this sacred land. The group Protect Pololū Valley started this petition and need your support to protect Pololū Valley.

Pololū is a sacred place. A pu’uhōnua (a place of refuge, peace and safety). Kohala is the birthplace of an infant who sought refuge in Pololū Valley and grew up to become the King of Hawaii and unify the lands. Original place names of this region tell the mo’olelo (story) of how the people of this place protected this infant on his journey to Pololū Valley. "A‘ohe u‘i hele wale o Kohala" (No youth of Kohala goes empty-handed) speaks to the generosity of the Kohala people. Pololū Valley is more than a place of "cultural signficance". It is the history of the Hawaiian people. It is a place of refuge that we must protect for our future generations.

On December 11, 2020 at the Board of Land and Natural Resources meeting the Division of Forestry and Wildlife submitted a request for approval to apply as a co-applicant to the County of Hawaii Planning Department together with Surety Kohala Corporation and KP Holdings LLC to submit a PCRS application for a 13-lot subdivision along the ridge at Pololū Valley. A request for approval to enter into a Letter of Intent with Surety Kohala Corporation and KP Holdings LLC was also submitted to donate land to the State of Hawaii.

At this meeting representatives from these organizations spoke as if the community was in agreement with their submittals. No one from the community attended the meeting or was notified about it. Prior discussions with the community were about the donation of lands to the State which include 5 acres to build a "comfort station" and parking lot for visitors and acreage on the valley floor for conservation. There was NO discussion about the proposed subdivison along the ridge. Surety Kohala Corporation and KP Holdings LLC will only donate land to the State AFTER the County approves the application for the subdivision. This is not a donation. It’s a payout.

This is a process of greed. It doesn’t consider the wisdom of our kūpuna (elders) and the future of our keiki (children). It doesn’t acknowledge Pololū Valley as a wahi pāna (a sacred place). Instead, the land is sold, as "the best view" to the highest bidder, during a pandemic and a climate crisis. The State of Hawaii has mismanaged conservation lands of our sacred mountain Mauna Kea, just as these organizations continue to mismanage the generosity of the people.

SIGN THIS PETITION TO PROTECT POLOLŪ VALLEY AND TELL SURETY KOHALA CORPORATION AND KP HOLDINGS LLC, BOARD OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES, DIVISION OF FORESTRY AND WILDLIFE, COUNTY OF HAWAII AND THE COUNTY OF HAWAII PLANNING DEPARTMENT THAT OUR VOICES WILL BE HEARD AND THAT WE DO NOT WANT MORE DESECRATION AT THIS SACRED PLACE OF REFUGE.

From Public Citizen:

No matter how much we all wish it were so, the coronavirus pandemic is NOT over:

  • The much more contagious Delta variant is now the dominant strain of COVID-19 in the U.S.
  • Cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are spiking in many parts of the country.
  • Far too many people have refused to get vaccinated (in large part because of irresponsible and unconscionable propaganda being spread by countless Republican politicians and right-wing media degenerates like Fox News’ sadistic Tucker Carlson — who are sacrificing their own followers to advance a Trumpist, neo-fascist agenda).
  • Yet state and local officials all across America are lifting commonsense restrictions and ending relief efforts as if the pandemic is all but over, despite the plain evidence staring us right in our faces.
  • And it’s all even worse throughout much of the world.
There is, to state the obvious, A LOT of work still to do.

One thing we need to do — and fast — is put pressure on Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson to share their vaccine technology with the world. This will help save millions of lives around the globe and minimize the risk of even worse variants making their way to America.

Tell the CEOs of Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson:

Share your vaccine recipes and know-how with the world — to save millions of lives around the globe and to reduce the risk of even worse variants making their way to America.

Add your name.

Thanks for taking action.

The Government Would Do That

The Government Would Do That

(Evidence collected by C.A. Matthews)

Perhaps the propaganda most Americans were indoctrinated in while growing up is starting to wear thin, but it still amazes me how many adults still believe the US government wouldn't do certain things that we attribute exclusively to the "bad guys" (e.g., "the Communists" or "Russia!").

"It can't be true!" some might say when confronted with an uncomfortable fact about our government, but there's plenty of evidence that proves it can be. Here are some examples of what the US government would do, has done, and will (more than likely) continue doing in our names.

On the historical front, we'd like to think that America is a land of "equal opportunity" and that all are treated well and have nothing to complain about. There are many who deny that slavery in the United States was all that "bad," and I've even heard arguments given on the "benefits" of slavery by whites. Some Americans might think "the Jim Crow laws" have something to do with migratory birds and that racism in America is not systemic, just personal. If so, how do we explain the destruction of Tulsa's Black Wall Street, and our government's lack of response to it and their denial of reparations to this day?

https://youtu.be/gIx668roluA

We'd like the US government to stop putting immigrant kids in cages, to stop preventing asylum seekers from entering the country, and to stop using archaic laws and scare tactics to prevent lawful immigration, but it's not happening. Here are some articles to prove it:

We'd like our government to tax the rich, and share those proceeds with the majority of working Americans for the good of all, but it's not happening. In fact, just the opposite happens on a regular basis as the following video attests.

https://www.rokfin.com/post/42302

We'd like our government to be fair and honest and not lie about hijacking dissidents or cooperating with such nefarious activities, but they do. Award-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald tells us about several incidents of our country's regime change tactics in the following video.

https://youtu.be/-NgI4v2BMPk

We'd like to think the US is always on the "good guys" side of violent conflicts, but how do we explain what's happening in Gaza? This excellent documentary (below) shows you where our tax dollars have been going for years... to the Military-Industrial Complex and then on to the Israeli army in order to wipe out the Palestinian people.

https://youtu.be/HnZSaKYmP2s

Well, it's not like the US government has ever intentionally committed genocide before, right?

It's time to wake up the rest of the people who still believe the crap they learned from their fifth grade American history textbook.

I’ve just returned to the Cheyenne River Nation from the frontlines of the Stop Line 3 movement in Minnesota. An incredible and growing coalition — led largely by Indigenous women — has formed to put an end to this pipeline, a grave threat to sacred lands and water. Like Keystone XL would have, Line 3 is slated to carry huge quantities of ultra-toxic tar sands oil through the homelands of Indigenous communities. I genuinely hope you’ll join me and the rest of the Lakota Law team in supporting this critical fight.

Please stand with the Anishinaabe Peoples and sign onto our petition to President Biden. Tell him to Stop Line 3 right now. Every pipeline forced through our treaty territories — always, it seems, without our consent — is an affront to our way of life and a danger to our culture, our women and children, and the future for our next seven generations.

stop line 3My sister, Mabel Ann, joined me at the Line 3 protests this past week. We are ready to fight.

From a climate crisis standpoint alone, it’s a no-brainer that Line 3 should be a nonstarter. Line 3 would run more than 1,000 miles from Canada to Lake Superior, and its carbon impact would be equivalent to 50 new coal plants! It also directly threatens the water supply of 18 million people and the sacred manoomin (wild rice) fields of the Anishinaabe People.

If that weren’t bad enough, the pipeline is already perpetuating the ongoing epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (#MMIW). So far, two contractors working on Line 3 have been charged with sex trafficking — no surprise considering that pipelines and the mancamps that house oil workers typically lead to increased sex trafficking, sexual abuse, and murders of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit People.

These are some of the many reasons why I, accompanied by my sisters, daughters and great granddaughters — and supported by a wonderful organization called 1000 Grandmothers — went to Minnesota to show solidarity. I’m so glad we did. We protested in front of the governor’s mansion and met with energized people in two camps, including some young activists from the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. They were grateful to receive our support as elders. When my daughter arrived at their camp, they told her, “Welcome home.”

I left for Cheyenne River with a resolve to do more. Now, our Lakota Law team is researching and reaching out to see how we can best assist. We’ll offer media support and organizing help — whatever is needed. We grandmas stand proudly alongside the young ones, our sisters on the frontlines, and everyone in this growing coalition.

We hope you will, too. If you feel called, I encourage you to join the fight in Minnesota for a week of action against Line 3, June 5-8. In the meantime, please tell the president: Stop Line 3 now.

Wopila tanka — thank you for your action and care!

Let’s be real. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced millions of tenants across the country to reckon with the violence of our housing system in new and profound ways. Thousands of us have been forced from our homes or to accrue devastating amounts of rental debt. And things weren't great for many of us, even before the pandemic.

One thing is clear: We as tenants don't have the power we need, especially compared to the people who own our homes.

That’s why we’re launching a campaign for a National Tenants’ Bill of Rights, a critical stepping stone on the path to our North Star vision, a Homes Guarantee. Our campaign will set the stage for a century of radical tenant organizing— establishing tenants as a political class, building the power of the tenant movement to win federal demands, and ultimately transforming the landscape of tenant organizing by enacting a National Tenants' Bill of Rights.

Will you join our mass organizing call on June 10 to launch this historic campaign for a National Tenants Bill of Rights?

We know that the people closest to the problems are closest to the solutions, so our campaign will begin a period of radical imagination, engaging over one million tenants to write our own rights into law. That's where you come in.

Join us as we forge ahead to build the world we deserve. R.S.V.P. HERE.

In solidarity,

The Homes Guarantee Team
